With regard to the crack-down on speeders in last week’s Local, I think many members of the public, besides congratulating the police on catching more than 1,700 offenders, will be surprised that it took a week to catch such a relatively small number. That figure would have been about right for 3 days in Main Street, Peasmarsh and Military Road, Rye where the 30 mph signs may just as well be melted down for scrap.

I would like to thank those residents who voted in the Brede Valley and Marsham Division in the council elections held last week. I was delighted to have been once again returned as the LOCAL choice for an East Sussex County Councillor to represent the villages of Westfield, Brede,Udimore,Pett,Three Oaks and Fairlight. In the face of a UKIP challenge brought about by national politics it was pleasing to win by a convincing margin. I pledge to continue to work hard for my constituents whatever their political allegiance!

It is not my wish to keep writing on this subject to the Observer, however, Mr. Stuart must realise his constant venomous campaign of vilification against anyone who has the temerity to hold a different opinion than he regarding the Lion Street development, (particularly me), indicates his total lack of understanding of planning matters, terms and conditions and the role of a councillor. He does not do his cause much good and many residents have now contacted me questioning his agenda.

I was incensed to read about the probable cancellation of the Rye Maritime Festival this summer due to the refusal by Rye Town Council to grant £500 in support. I hope that as many people as possible will write to you, as I am doing, as their attitude seems very small-minded. Elsewhere in your newspaper The Rye Town Clerk is quoted as saying (referring to another subject) “The majority of parish and town councillors prefer to conduct their council’s business free of party politics. They are motivated solely by a desire to act in their community’s best interests.”

Hawkhurst isn’t in Rother

Councillor Souster wrote last week that I can’t have been listening when the planning application for the proposed cinema in Lion St was determined at Rother District Council a couple of weeks ago. I was quoted in the Rye Observer as having said that Cllr Souster spoke against the the application. Last week, Cllr Souster wrote to the paper stating that he had said he was in favour of the cinema concept.

Dogs mess is not from the locals

Two weeks ago there was a letter regarding dogs mess at Winchelsea Beach and blaming the residents. 99% of the residents who have dogs treat the local area in a responsible manner and clear up afterwards.

Airport is an act of desecration

THE champagne celebrations at Lydd Airport on April 10 were no surprise. But let not Executive Manager Hani Mutlaq have the effrontery to claim as he does (Rye Observer April 19) that this is the ‘right choice’ for ‘our’ community. The community he speaks for is of course himself and his employer, his management team, a relatively small number of airport employees and the minority of local residents who support the expansion. As journalist Jamie Doward reported in the (national) Observer of 26 February 2012, ‘If Pickles approves the airport’s expansion he will be going against the government’s adviser, Natural England, Shepway’s planning officers, the majority of Lydd’s residents, the scientific consensus on the need to reduce carbon emissions, the prime minister’s perceived green credentials and the coalition’s belief in empowering communities as enshrined in its much-vaunted localism act’. The majority of the community of Romney Marsh, including Rye and the surrounding area, with the support of every environmental organisation, have valiantly fought the expansion. Not exactly, then, the ‘democracy’ that Britain is so proud of. For them, and for all who cherish the beauty and tranquillity of Romney Marsh, it is very patently the wrong choice. It is also a choice for which present and future generations will never forgive the airport’s foreign owner, Shepway councillors and David Cameron’s government who are colluding in one of the worst acts of environmental desecration in the history of our British Isles.

There has been discussion about the cost of repairs borne by car owners who hit unannounced and deep potholes - and there are plenty of those - but there is an equally if not greater danger lurking at the side of the road where ruts have been gouged from the verges. Some of these seen on the narrower bends in local roads, such as Eatenden Lane to Netherfield and Church/Kent Lane, Mountfield, towards Brighling are up to 9 inches deep and 20 feet long.
